OUR SURROUNDINGS |
Kirkfieldbank lies at the end of the Clyde valley & at the foot of the Royal Burgh of Lanark. Lanark is an historic market town dating back to Roman times & held the first meeting of the Scots Parliament in 978AD. In the twelfth century the castle was frequently used by William 1st as a Royal Residence. The town was created a Royal Burgh by David 1st in 1140AD. William Wallace also made the town his home & is said to have married in St Kentigerns church. Wallace started the Scottish uprising against the English in Lanark in 1297AD & these scenes are depicted in the opening scenes of the movie Braveheart. |

Lanark's prosperity continued through to the Victorian era when industry thrived, culminating in the construction of the New Lanark cotton mill, pioneered by Robert Owen, which was granted World Heritage status in 2001. |
Today, Lanark is a thriving market town & agricultural centre with its own market auction which houses one of the largest sheep auctions in Europe. Various events such as tractor fairs and classic car displays are frequently held there & with the increased historical interest due to Wallace, tourism in Lanark is also on the increase. |
